Maria Callas was born in New York in 1923. She went to Athens to study opera in 1937. After that, she went on and performed in many opera houses in America and Europe. People enjoyed hearing her sing. She could sing in French, German and Italian. She was well-known for singing difficult roles, and was famous for having a bad temper. She used to appear in famous venues and managed to earn reputation as an excellent singer and actress. She spent some time teaching opera at Juilliard and decided to give a final world concert tour in 1972-73. After that, she retired after performing over forty different roles. She was considered to be one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century.
