Nowadays, most families have to share the housework. One member mops, another gets rid of the dust collected over the weeks, and from my point of view, all this can be very tidious and tiring sometimes. On the other hand, parents still have to be at least a little bit strict with their kids and teens, simply because otherwise, not only will everything be a mess, but also kids will grow habits of slacking off work and sitting around all day doing nothing.
Therefore, yes housework is needed.
