The first documents attest to the presence of slavery in a great civilization are those in Sumeria (Mesopotamia), but in a limited form. In ancient Egypt, especially during the New Empire, a number of slaves characterized a certain social importance. Most individuals became slaves after capturing them during wars or by kidnapping.
