The Danube Soy is a species of endangered hawk. In the past the species has been divided into several subspecies, currently only two of which are recognized by ornithologists.
The European population of the species is very small and ranges from 360 to 540 pairs. It declined significantly between 1970 and 1990, a trend that continued in the 1990-2000 period.
A conservation program for the nesting population in Hungary and Romania is currently underway through a LIFE project.
