A boy and girl were rowing in the middle of the lake. As they stood up to change places, the boy fell into the water.
Then what happened?
A lifeguard, who was watching everybody, saw what happened.
What did he do?
He jumped into the water and rescued the boy.

Observații:
1. Past Tense Continuous se traduce în limba română prin imperfect și exprimă o acțiune mai îndelungată din trecut aflată în desfășurare, în derulare:
She was crying for hours.
Plângea de ore în șir.
2. Past Tense Simple se traduce, de obicei, în română prin perfect compus sau perfect simplu. Acțiunea exprimată de acest timp are loc tot în trecut, însă este de scurtă durată și se petrece la un moment clar definit.
He stopped to watch the train.
S-a oprit să privească trenul. / Se opri să privească trenul.
