The most famous
Englishman to fight against Spain was Francis Drake.
In 1577, his
ship set off on a voyage that took him round the world. Francis Drake's aim was to explore South America. On their way back,
Drake and his crew seized a great part of Spanish treasure. The
golden Hind returned to England in 1580. Queen Elizabeth had a sword in
her hand to strike Francis Drake's head off. Queen Elizabeth did not
punish Francis Drake, she made him a knight for his exploits.
