Learning a foreign language helps you appreciate your own. I would also add that when you learn a foreign language, you suddenly realize all these facts about your own language that you just subconsciously know from growing up speaking it.In order for you to understand your mother tongue, you will have to learn other languages as well. You have to create a measure in order to compare them and understand the value of your language.
